Imagine being in Medellin, Colombia.

You’re in a coffee shop with a beautiful Latina.

While sipping one of the world’s finest coffee, you find yourself chatting about your lives, your interests and hobbies, current events, and your respective cultures.

She’s laughing at your attempt to speak Spanish and you’re having a good time.

Understandably, you’re starting to wish for your life to be like this every day.

Well, it can.

If you visit this city and venture out to meet Latinas and make friends in the local scene, days like this are always possible.

That brings us to the purpose of this article. We’ll be giving you tips on how to make friends and meet new people while exploring the City of Eternal Spring.

Now, brush your worries aside. Gaining friends is the last thing you need to worry about if you’re in Medellin. Locals are known to be quite friendly, warm, and welcoming towards tourists and expats alike.

There’s little to no chance of you feeling alienated.

Having said that, you still need to make a small effort to go out there and engage with people.

Here are some tips to get you started:

Join Facebook Groups

If you’re not too confident directly approaching locals in public spaces, you might want to start your pursuit using social media. You can make friends and meet Latinas online by joining specific groups on Facebook such as:

  • Medellin Expat and Tourist Info
  • Medellin Gringo Info
  • Medellin Hiking Group
  • Medellin Foodies Group
  • Doing Business and Living in Medellin

Though the majority of the members of these groups are tourists and expats themselves, you’ll still be able to find locals who are interested in meeting gringos.

As a tip, don’t be afraid to interact in group posts.

If someone sparks your interest, send them a private message and talk to them. Once you’ve formed a bond or connection, ask them out to meet for lunch or have coffee somewhere.

Join a Hiking Group

Not only do you get to meet Colombian girls and possibly gain friends on the journey, but you’ll also get to stretch your limbs and explore the scenic hiking trails of the city.

Medellin Hiking Group on Facebook is a great place to meet people who are interested in hiking. Check for group post updates to see available hiking invitations from random members. You can decide if you’d like to join their group hike or not.

Get Yourself a Dog

This is only applicable if you’re planning to stay long-term.

Expat life can be isolating, especially if you’re living alone. Getting a dog as a companion is a great idea to lessen loneliness and homesickness.

Besides, these fur babies make great wingmen for attracting Colombian women.

According to multiple scientific studies, having a dog increases a person’s attractiveness. In other words, landing dates with women are a lot easier if you own one.

To add, the city of Medellin is extremely dog friendly. A lot of establishments like malls and restaurants allow pets to enter. There’s little to no downside to owning one. Give it a thought.

Enroll in a Group Spanish Class or Attend a Language Exchange Program

Meeting women and making friends in Medellin will be much easier if you learn Spanish.

What better way to do that than by enrolling yourself in a group language class or by attending language exchange events? You get to meet new people while learning a new language.

Aside from that, you can eventually put your newly acquired skills to the test when dating Colombian women. Talking to them in their native tongue will definitely give you additional attractive points.

Without a doubt, it’s worth the investment.

Enroll in a Salsa Class

Dancing is a huge part of Colombian culture. We have yet to meet Hispanic ladies who don’t love to dance because most of them do. Hence, if you’re in Colombia, whether you’re in Cali or Medellin, you need to know how to dance the salsa. It’s a must if you want to fit in.

Take a salsa class, there are tons of them in Medellin. After a few weeks of private classes, you’ll eventually learn how to smoothly navigate the dance floor.

Soon enough, you’ll be confidently asking Colombian ladies to dance with you in clubs.

Sign Up for Volunteer Work

Think of it as a way to give back to the local community.

Though Medellin has gone from one of the most dangerous places in the world to a thriving and safe city in a few decades, there are still lots left to be done.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city are small marginalized communities that require the help of volunteers.

There are volunteer groups that specifically focus on rehabilitation of poor neighborhoods in Medellin, such as the famous Comuna 13 and La Sierra.

You can connect with group organizers through their respective Facebook pages.

One of the most active ones is Nomads Giving Back. The majority of its members are expats who wish to make a positive impact in Medellin.

Organize a Meetup or Join One

To reiterate, the easiest and most effective way to make friends in Medellin is by joining online groups. In these groups, you can post an advertisement for a meetup event you’d like to organize.

On the other hand, if you don’t want to hassle yourself with organizing an event, you can always participate in third party organized local meetups such as MeetUp(.com) and InterNations(.org).

These sites let you input specific details on what kind of meetup you’d like to participate in — be it for romance, friendship, or both.

Hopefully, you’ve gotten some useful ideas on how to meet and befriend people in Medellin. It’s really not difficult. You just need to find the courage to put yourself out there and stop being afraid.

Is Medellin Safe?

Of course, it is!

However, like every other country in the world, there are bad people who do bad things. To avoid putting yourself in an unsafe scenario, you need to stay vigilant and use good judgment and common sense in all your dealings while you meet Latinas and make friends in the city.
